There are probably a lot of different reasons why someone would want (or need) to make a lectern! In my case, it was something of a challenge – and for reasons I’d prefer not to go into, I had to do it fairly quickly. Also, for the same reasons, I had to do it as cheaply as possible, using only the material provided. In this case, my contribution was the screws, labor, and the design.
I built this item using three separate pieces of pine plank, numerous off-cuts, and screws. No metal brackets of any kind were used. Considering the limited amount of material I had with which to build this lectern, I decided on a simple, modernistic approach to the design, and figured it could still be made to look quite attractive.
Balance was also important, so the base had to be larger than the top, and also heavier since the lectern leans backwards, towards the person using it.
The base consists of a rectangular plank with feet attached underneath all four corners made from off-cut squares screwed to it. The pylon connecting the base and the top surface was attached at an angle to the upper portion of the base, leaning against a triangular support. All were screwed firmly together. Care should be taken that all edges and angles are even, or the pylon would lean to the side, which would NOT look good!
Additionally, screw holes were drilled out first to prevent chipping or cracking – since almost every part of this design is load-bearing, any weakness would render the end-product useless.
In order to attach the top surface to the top of the pylon, a support was first screwed across the top edge of the pylon. The support is the same width of the intended top.
The top was made from a smaller rectangle of pine plank, which also has a vertical plank attached to the front edge to add more “completeness” to the item. It was also attached to the pylon by screwing it to the support a the top of the pylon. Another triangular support was measured and cut to support the top from underneat at the rear of the pylon.
The lectern was finished off with varnish.
Again, aside from the screws used, the entire project consists of wood.
And there it is – a functional attractive lectern in one quick afternoon!
